In this episode, the crew discusses what it looks like to rest, and how to deal with brain overactivity
Welcome back to the Everyday Kingdom podcast. I'm Caleb here with Miriam and Raphael, and we are ready to rock and roll today.
SPEAKER_02Yes, we are.
SPEAKER_01You guys ready to rock and roll today? Yeah. So have you ever been in a space in your life where you have been working nonstop and then you've just been going, going, going, going, and then you get totally exhausted, but you keep going instead because why would I stop going?
SPEAKER_02Well, sometimes you don't have a choice.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's very true. That's true. Except that you always have a choice.
SPEAKER_02Really energetic, really positive. Miriam scheduled it this way. Uh exactly. Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Energetic, positive Miriam is writing checks that tired Miriam can't cash. I tell you what. So one time uh I went off caffeine for three years, and uh my friends decided to to have me have a cup of coffee and and take me to Coffee Crossing. And so I love Coffee Crossing, it's one of my favorite places, and decided, you know what? I'm gonna get I'm gonna get a cup of actual caffeinated coffee and and just to see how things are going, you know. I haven't had it in a while. Well, I had that cup of coffee and then we got back to church. Yes, and I did several projects. I could not stop moving.
SPEAKER_02I remember that day well.
SPEAKER_01I was so amped and decided we're gonna do this project, this project, this project, and this project.
SPEAKER_02And all of them in two weeks.
SPEAKER_01And to this day, we're still my less caffeinated behind is having to cash checks that my caffeinated behind wrote. I remember Heather was like, I've never seen you like this.
SPEAKER_02She didn't, she wasn't quite sure what to do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was, I mean, literally, we were having a meeting. Raphael, we're having a meeting in my office, and as we're having the meeting, I'm walking around like putting stuff away, organizing the office as we're talking about it.
SPEAKER_02And then he said, Let's go downstairs and talk about it. I we need to go downstairs. So then we went downstairs and you walked around, you're like, Okay, this wall, that wall, this wall, and we're gonna do this and move this, and then we're gonna put this here. And I think we can go ahead and paint this tomorrow, and then we can do this next week, and then in two weeks we'll do this. And had the whole plan, and we just listened.
SPEAKER_01And and and then we did it. There's nothing we could do. And then we did it. Most of it. It's not all done yet. No, it's not, but yeah, I had plans on building walls and painting things, and yeah, it was great. And so uh it's it's it's it was here's the thing. Here's what it's what's cool that came out of it. I had that caffeine, right? And what does caffeine do? Caffeine and stimulate it it's a stimulant, but the specifically how it does is it blocks your tired receptors. Like that's how it that's why it makes you feel as if you aren't tired, even though you might actually be tired, your body might actually be tired. The way that caffeine works is it blocks your tired receptors, so you don't feel like you're tired. Uh, and so in that moment, I didn't feel as if I was tired, even though my body probably was physically tired or maybe even a need to rest. But because I had that caffeine, I didn't feel that way. And so I was doing all the kinds of things that I wouldn't do whenever I was tired. And it got me thinking about, you know, what does it look like for someone? And I, you know, I'm I'm 36 years old now. It took me a second to think about how old I was. I'm 36 years old now, and my body does not move the way that it did when I was 26. The the the recovery time for things, and and and like I I I feel things a lot more than I did then. Raphael, maybe you can talk about this too. Like, have you noticed a difference with within yourself as you've aged, you know, uh with your body's response time, recovery time, and and maybe I'd need maybe a little bit more time to rest.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Um I tried to do a trip that was uh like a two-day trip just to go to uh church service and uh drive back home on no sleep, just a little bit of caffeine. Uh-huh. Right. And uh I was going to sleep while I was driving, and I'm just like, I gotta pull over. Like, I can't do this. Like, this is not good, this is not healthy. Yeah. This will end my life if I do not get rest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And and it's it's it's one of those situations where you know, the older that we get, our body it doesn't recover normally, like I'm gonna say normally, or as we you had come to expecting it, or had come to expect it to respond and recover. So we have to be more intentional about our own recovery. And I was thinking about that from a spiritual sense as well, that as we continue to grow and continue to mature, uh, how do things change inside of us spiritually to the to the space where we're where do we where do we get to a point where we begin to m mature in our spiritual walk uh and decide you know what, there's things that I need today that I didn't realize that I need, and maybe beforehand I it wasn't on my radar, but now it is. And I think that rest is one of those those things. What do you think about that, Miriam?
SPEAKER_02I think that that's true. I think that, you know, like you know, Ralph was talking about you he had this two day trip and he thought, Oh, I can do it with no sleep, it's no big deal. But then realizing that he couldn't, you know, I always have been someone who prefers to stay up late and then sleep in if I could, but was always fine with six or fewer hours of sleep. Like that was no big deal. Yeah, you know, but as I have matured, I've come to find out, you know what, I really don't function too well unless it's seven and a half or eight. You know, so what I'm saying is I would used to continually choose to go to sleep late because I just preferred to be up. But recognizing that my body needs that rest to recover for the next day, then choosing to go to bed at 10, 10 30, or at the latest 11, you know, has been a lot better for me just physically. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? So you're talking about as we mature spiritually, though. And so we have talked before about moving from performance-based religion to relationship, right? And when you're performing, you think I have to do XYZ. There's this many hours in a day, and it's gotta be like this. So you do things like in this pattern, right? So we set up these patterns where this is what I do and this is why I do it, because if I don't, then God's gonna be upset with me or somebody else is, and it's important that I keep everybody happy.
SPEAKER_01Because I have to.
SPEAKER_02Because I have to, yes, that's why I said I don't have a choice. I'm a victim in this. Instead of recognizing that wait, my body is a temple and my life is worship, right? And so as a living sacrifice, if I want this to continue to be a living sacrifice, I get to take care of this body. And the fact of the matter is, is our physical body has limitations. Yeah, you know, we we think, you know, I can do this and and just by sheer will, and there are a lot of things that we can will ourselves to do. I do sincerely believe that, and and there's a lot of power in that, but also we don't need to abuse our bodies and our cells need rest, and and being able to recognize that is a point of maturity, whether it's you know, for your physical body or spiritually, recognizing that father, you commanded Elijah to rest too. You know, you gave him opportunity to rest and and to take that time. And so my sleeping for a day in the middle of the day, even though that's not my habit, is not sloth slothful, you know, because a lot of times you think, oh, you're spending the day in bed, or you're spending the day just relaxing. That's so slothful. But really, no, my body, I'm I'm giving a chance for my soul to catch up to my body, like we we've talked about before, too. Um go ahead, right?
SPEAKER_00I think you can also vex your soul. What I mean by that is wear out your soul continually by worrying or or just caring so much. Care, care is good, yeah, respect is good, honor is good. Yeah, but when you're so focused on that so much, too much of a good thing is is not good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so you gotta learn how to let the cares of this life not choke you out. That's a good word. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Ultimately, do you have something to do with that?
SPEAKER_02Well, I was just gonna say, and when we continue to do that, we're we're putting ourselves in a place. It's really pride because if I don't do this, it's not gonna happen. If I don't take care of this, the whole church is gonna fall apart, Sunday service is gonna be terrible, and if I'm not there to lead it, you know, or whatever, and and all this responsibility is on me, when in truth it really has nothing to do with it.
SPEAKER_01So that's what I was actually gonna get to was I was gonna ask the question you know, does the world keep turning when Miriam takes a nap? Does the world keep turning when Raphael watches a TV show? Does the world keep turning when uh Caleb is sitting in a chair? Right, like Yes. The answer is yes, it does. The world keeps turning, life keeps happening. And and even a an and even better question would be is Jesus still on the throne when those things are taking place? Right.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes, he's still glorified, you know.
SPEAKER_01And and and I think one of the things that we we get to do, you know, is have a healthy perspective of what rest looks like. A lot of times people look at rest and they they think that it's it's just inactivity. But it it's not inactivity. There's actually purpose and activity to it because I can be sitting still, think about it like this, I can be sitting still, air quotes doing nothing, but my mind, like you said, could be racing. I it could my soul could be vexed because I'm highly anxious about this and this and this and this. And there are so many people who can't find rest until the checklist has been marked off. And and and so it becomes this this uh idol, essentially, in in life in their life. That's like until I take care of all of these uh issues and I check those off the list, until that happens, I can't have rest. I can't find rest. And and what that does is it you are actually communicating, God, I cannot find peace and rest until I work and I do these things. I can't find peace in you until I accomplish something. And so you uh you've done exactly what you were just saying, Miriam, was you've put yourself on the throne.
SPEAKER_02Right, or I don't deserve it.
SPEAKER_01And I don't deserve it. It's self-centeredness, it's pride, it comes back to that space of, you know, it it's it's the the the unredeemed form of justice, yeah, you know, in in my own mind, and thinking I can only have this, I can only have dessert once I've eaten my vegetables. Right. You we we understand why it happens, how it's been produced in our lives, because we've been conditioned this way by so much stuff in life. But the free gift of God is this eternal life thing, and it's a gift that he has given us. And inside of this gift are so many, inside of this package of of salvation that God gives are so many things. And one of those included is peace and rest. That's right. You know, and so for us in Christ, for those in Christ, we get to learn how to abide in him, how to live in him, how to live from him. And what that means is we get to learn how to rest from him, because Christ is my Sabbath. That's right. And and beforehand, and this is the beauty of our God and our creator, like he knows the human rhythms because he created us. And so he's he establishes this rhythm for humanity to say, okay, I want you to work and then I want you to rest. I want you to work and then I want you to rest. So he establishes this rhythm for us to understand because our bodies, we need that. We physically need to rest. You know, you might only you might, and each one of us, our capacities are different. So Raphael might be able to function really well on four hours of sleep, whereas Miriam needs six and Caleb needs 12. You know, like, and that's that's okay. Each one of us is gonna have those rhythms of rest. But what we have to understand and recognize is I need to acknowledge I'm in a physical body, and so this is what I do. But spiritually, Christ is our rest. That's right. He is our Sabbath, you know, and so what that means is that now in these moments, and this is what's so cool about it, is when I realize Christ is my Sabbath, it's easier for me to physically rest.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01Because my mind is not racing on I've got to do all these things in order to be at peace. I am at peace because of Christ. I am at rest because of Christ. I live at rest because of Christ, and then I can just like Christ take naps during storms.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_00I get something for you. So there's a study where people have had problems sleeping and like like they literally only sleep like off and on like one hour or two, and then they wake up and they have a really bad sleep pattern. But when they wrote down what they were thinking about, or they wrote down what they needed to do, suddenly that list of paper that was physical to the left of them or to the right of them, when they went to go lay down their head, they slept for seven, eight hours. And I think about how God wrote upon the tablets of our hearts and he said, Write these things continually, right, write my laws continually. Like what does that look like? It's a promise. You shall serve the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and strength. Like, it's gonna happen. No matter what you do. Like, you don't have to worry about how you like you serve him. Yeah, like it's it's just gonna come out of your heart because it's written. It is this is written. Like when the enemy tells you these things are not going to happen, right? I'm gonna rest and it is written. It is written on my mind, it's written on my heart, and I can rest, and my soul is going to rest, my body is going to rest, and I'm gonna be filled in that time because it is written.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's good, Rough. Uh because I think that's the that's the big one of the biggest battles is in our own minds is like it's uh I've not done enough. You know, especially for people who are who are high capacity or highly driven people. You know, there's some that maybe this there's might be some that are listening to this, they're like, I don't relate to that at all. But there's probably a few that think I know exactly what you're talking about because I wrestle with this idea of I'm not doing enough. I'm not, I don't, I don't, I don't have I've got there's so many things that need to be done, or I've got so many responsibilities, or I should be doing X, Y, and Z. And so there's this accusation that takes place inside of your own mind and and in and in your own heart that says it's it's not enough. But you're saying, no, this is what's been written inside of your heart by our Father. This is going to take place. This is gonna come out of your, this is gonna be the fruit of your life, it's gonna come out of your life. Now you can rest in what I've written. You can rest in my word. Yeah, because that's what that is. You can rest in my word, my law, my words have been written upon your heart. So rest in that. Allow your heart to be at rest. And and even that illustration of uh writing things down and setting it off to the side is of is a very natural illustration of casting your cares upon the Lord, you know, that there's things that going on inside of you. If there's if there are issues that are causing you to not be at rest because you're constantly thinking about it, write it down and give it to him. I I used to do this thing where where if I was really wrestling with something, I would write it down, put it in an envelope, and address it to God and be like, no, I'm giving. I'm literally, it was like this physical act of I'm literally, I'm giving, I'm I'm mailing this to you. This is for you. And it just it helped me to get in my mind or in my mind's eye at least this image of God, I'm casting this care upon you. This is yours. I'm mailing it to you, no return to sender. Like this is yours. And then it and then I was able to release it. Like that illustration just super helped me a lot. What do you have to say, Miriam? You look like you're you're ready to just unload on us. I like it.
SPEAKER_02Well, I was just thinking uh a few things. Actually, Raphael was talking about being written on our hearts, and I was thinking about his name being written on our hearts, right? So, and then I was reminded of in Isaiah where it says, He is it what is it, he he will be at peace whose mind is stayed on him. Yeah. And so whatever's swirling in my brain, if I can bring the focus back to him always, right, you know, then I then there's the peace. And then I was thinking about being sealed by the Holy Spirit, who's our comfort, right? And so I was thinking, okay, Father, you've sealed us in you. And so I can be at peace. And even though these things are swirling around me, I'll write them down, send them off to you, and then I can receive your peace because I see you. You know, and my mind is on you. Think about you.
SPEAKER_01Think about we're all parents here. Think about, you know, we we've each had children and had to deal with the anxiety of kids, especially when they're young. And and and and a lot of times they're not thinking about all of the things that they have to do until they maybe get a little bit older. But there are still things that they're anxious over and they're s or or scared of.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Right. And and and ultimately at the end of the day, our own anxiety about the things that haven't been done are because we're scared of something. It's a it's a it's a fear base at the at the core of it, you know, that I'm maybe I'm afraid that if I don't get this done, people are gonna look at me differently. It's gonna ruin my reputation. Somebody's gonna be let down. You know, like i there's a there's a fear at the core of all that. But what do we do as parents to invite them into a state of rest because they're at night going chaotic, thinking about all of the things that scare them. We welcome them into our arms, we hold them. We hold them and and and and and it then all of a sudden they're brought to peace. Right? We talk to them, we we reassure them hey, everything's okay. I love you, I'm here for you. My presence is enough, you're safe, my presence is enough. Yes, and and all of a sudden it puts their hearts at ease and it puts their minds at rest. In the same way, we're all children of God. You know, and exactly what you were just describing, Miriam, is I will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on me. That that when my mind is stayed on him, that he keeps me, he wraps me in his arms of peace. You know, that that this is that space where he's like, No, here my presence is peaceful, it is filled with peace. Jesus is the prince of peace, meaning, meaning this is his royalty and rule. I I my reign is a reign of peace. The the the the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. So we we have we have a father who keeps us in perfect peace, we have a son who is prince of peace, and we have a Holy Spirit whose kingdom sealed by peace. Right. And so it it it's it's this it's this idea that if we would allow ourselves to be wrapped up in everything that He is, that He's gonna keep us in this state of peace and it will allow us to rest. And and don't wouldn't you know that a good father knows that his kids need rest?
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01And and they and a good father can always identify when his kids need rest because they start to get a little crankier. And I was just dealing with that uh recently with my kids. I'm like, they just need a nap. Like seriously, you just need to see that. Early bed times for everybody. School started, and and especially my five-year-old, this is the first day having five days of school, plus then aftercare. She's not herself, she's a little on edge, she's crying more, and and so it's that's not common for her. It's because she's outside of her comfort zone. And so, what do we do to help to get her regulated? I hold her and I say, Come here, let me hold you for a little bit. And then she rises, and the other night, literally, she fell asleep on my chest, and she hasn't done that in in years, but she just needed that rest. And so I held her and then I put her in her bed. And so I just in the same way, that's what our father will do to us. And we're just big kids, we're just old kids. That's all we are.
SPEAKER_02Not old kids, big kids.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, older kids. We're just older, we're just older kids. And and and if we can have the maturity to say, Dad, I need you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh hold me. And and and I'm okay. There's a thousand things to do. Dad's saying, Hey, we can we can tackle some of those things tomorrow. It's okay. I'm here and I love you. Just rest in hours. And you find yourself in that space. It's so good. Raphael, what's one of the ways that you like to rest? Because I know everybody does it differently.
SPEAKER_00This may not be uh rest for everybody else. But I love just going through the word of God. I went through the book of Ezekiel from chapter one to like chapter 44.
SPEAKER_02Um Ezekiel doesn't sound like rest to me. I'll just be honest, but I love it.
SPEAKER_00But I loved how Ezekiel he was just like, I just want to see you, God. I want to I I wanna know you. And it starts off with all this dung, like throughout his whole entire life. Like he's seeing vision after vision, he's seeing finally, you know, dead bones. I can receive life. God doesn't just say, okay, it ends here. It ends with something of a promise. Like, hey, I'm going to bring peace to everything. Like from the beginning, you've seen some pretty cool things. You've seen angels. You've seen me, you've seen dead bodies come back to life, and nothing compares to the river that flows out of the throne of God and the tree of life on both sides of the river. Like it feels it fill me knowing and reading these things and just taking time just to be quiet before Him. Yeah. Because I am very loud. And I I'm constantly speaking. And my wife says, Why don't you speak speak more to me? And I'm just like, I've sp spoken a lot today. Like, and it's just like peaceful, just to be quiet. And she's just like, okay, I get it. Like, you just need to be quiet. You're resting. And so that's one thing that I do is just rest before the Lord. And my Sabbath may not look like your guys' Sabbath, but I really feel like that I need to even stop reading. And just let there be quiet. Lay in the bed. Just lay in the bed. Don't don't turn on TV show. Right. Because my mind will go even when a TV show is going. And it's the hardest thing for me to even do in the morning. Yeah. Is just not look at my phone or look at what I have to do during the morning, but literally rest. But when I do have those rest moments, even between waking, I have encounters with God that are surreal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. And it's it's it's beautiful what happens when you get yourself into a space of quiet. Uh whether it's in a chair or on a bed or in the shower or like the the the scriptures talk about the secret place, you know, and and it's I I think for so many of us, people have dreams and they have visions and those kinds of things uh because our minds are continually bombarded with information all of the time, whether it's through our phones or the TV or you know, whatever it is that's around what that's constantly being bombarded by information. And so sometimes the only times that we're quiet enough to hear God speak are through dreams and through visions. And so that's his way of like, I'm speaking to you here, hear me. You know, um, I I used to joke because I was like, man, it seems like every time that I got in the shower, God would speak to me, you know, because that was the time where I was away from everything. And uh I I think that it's important for us to make sure that part of our rhythms that we have in our life as we're living is to to build in just intentional quiet times. You know, God is is is really good at being able to find those times in our life. But if we can be intentional about building in those times, uh you'll like what you said, Ralph, we'll we'll have these encounters with God uh that are are so incredible because we're making intensive it's like making an intentional time for a date. Right. You know, it it's it's saying, okay, I'm I'm not gonna touch my phone. I yesterday I came in here for a few hours, not a few hours, a few minutes, and uh laid down and just was quiet. And I just I literally just stared up at the ceiling um and was just listening with no stimulation, no nothing, just listening to the Lord and um just stilling myself. Yeah, you know, and I and I think that that having something like being able to do that, even if it's for just five minutes, uh, is is so good for our soul and our spirit.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, and if and if you know if you're listening today, maybe uh consider making uh that part of the rhythm of your life is and and and you know, finding time to just take some moments to be quiet and be still. And you'd be surprised at what God will speak to your heart. Yeah. Aaron, what about you? What do you like to do for rest and yeah, recovery?
SPEAKER_02It's literally just sleep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you know, I like to maybe watch a movie, but like Ralph said, if I'm at home, I have trouble because if I'm at home and I'm sitting, I'll be like, okay, I'll sit for 15 minutes and then I'll change the laundry out or I'll fold this load and I'll challenge myself. Okay, how fast can I do this? Because then I can sit back down. Yeah. But it's it's broken up, it's not like continuous. Do you know what I mean? And for me, it's just like, okay, so but if I make myself lie down and take a nap, or or at the end of the day when I can go to sleep, I it actually feels like a reset. Yeah. Does that make any sense? So, like that, that's one of the ways I think that I actually get rest. I also like to rest. I like to be around people, and it is really it is actually energizing for me to just sit in a room and and talk and or listen to people talk. You know, that is energizing for me. So when there's not responsibilities that have to be met or anything to do, but just being there, um, that can be rejuvenating for me. So a couple ways.
SPEAKER_01I love that. I I uh I f I discovered something very disturbing about myself uh the other day. I actually I let my phone die. And I just decided I'm letting my phone die, I'm not gonna use it. And it, I mean, it died at like 6 p.m.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_01So from six until I went to bed, it was it was dead. And but what I discovered that was disturbing was that I sat down to watch a show and I found myself in the middle of the show wanting to grab my phone to look at it and to to scroll. And I thought, oh my gosh, this habit that I is part of my life that I didn't realize has become a habit is so pervasive that I'm consuming information and entertainment and I'm still needing more. I'm like, oh my goodness. So yeah, it was like this, it was this, it's it's it's kind of like if you're doing a diet and like you cut out sugar or something, then you're like, holy moly, I put sugar everywhere. Like it's all over the place. What's wrong with me? You know, but it was it was it was this like, oh my gosh. So sometimes you don't even realize some of the things that that that maybe have a little bit more of a hold on you uh than than you thought, and and taking a break and fasting those things, um, letting your phone die, putting it in the other room on the charger. How long can you go? Like I I I would put a challenge to people and say, hey, can you go one full day without being on your phone? I'm serious. Like, can you could you go one full day without being on your phone? That's actually one of the reasons why I love going on our retreats, yeah, uh for for our our our staff and and and um leadership teams is because the place we go has no cell phone service. So it's basically pointless to be on your phone, you know, and then you're interacting with each other, which is wonderful. Um but yeah, uh finding that that rhythm of rest, I think, is so vital for our health. And I just want to encourage anybody who's listening today to to you know, examine your own heart. Nobody's sitting here forcing you to do anything. Uh that's not what this is about. But uh it's a it's it's a it's it's consider this. You know, consider making it a habit to to find rest. You know, we're all we're we're high capacity people, we like to run a gun, we like to move and move and groove. Um, but as I'm continuing to to live life, I'm finding more value in finding the times to unstring the bow uh so that I can shoot it better. You know, and and and that's uh we all want our life to to be full and have meaning and purpose and be effective. And I I think part of our effectiveness is found in our ability to learn how to rest. Even Jesus learned how to rest and knew how to rest. And so, and the reason Jesus could rest is because he knew he was always taken care of. There was nothing they had to worry about. The father's is always good. And so I I think if we can adopt that same kind of a mentality, it'll help us to rest as well. And and uh and I would challenge anybody go a day without your phone, see what happens. Do it do a phone fast.
SPEAKER_02Do it do it for five hours.
SPEAKER_01Do it, yeah. Start with five hours, start with an hour. You know, maybe if it's something you got a hold of or your computer or just technology in general, see what happens. Just see see how your mind resets, how your body resets, and uh and watch what happens. So awesome. Well, thank you guys for listening to another episode of the Everday Kingdom podcast. Go get some rest today. We'll see you next time.
